An Olymipc hero was overwhelmed by the generosity of the rowing community after they helped her raise more than £30,000 for a charity close to her heart.
Twice-world champion sculler Sarah Winckless returned to the sport for the Henley Women's Regatta last weekend for a poignant fundraising challenge.
The 35-year-old Marlow rower joined former commonwealth champion Victoria Wood in a bid to raise £10,000 in 10 days for the charity Scottish Huntington's Association.
Sarah's mother Val, of West London, is a sufferer of the degenerative Huntington's disease and the Henley resident is herself gene-positive meaning she could develop the condition in later life.
"It has been a bit over whelming for us both. The response has been incredibly heart warming," said Victoria.
"We feel exhilarated and underestimated the rowing fraternity who have an immensely high regard for Sarah.
"She was so moved by the messages of good will and people's spontaneity. It was an amazing experience."
They had little chance to train together but Sarah and Victoria battled through the first races but were knocked out of the doubles event in the semi-final.
The justgiving charity website was down over the weekend and mother Victoria has encouraged people to continue donating at www.justgiving.com/pullforhuntingdons
