Ian Woosnam is determined to add a senior major to his collection after winning last year’s John Jacobs Trophy - the Senior Tour’s version of the European Order of Merit.
Last year was Woosnam’s debut season on the tour in which he won both the Polish Senior Championship and Russian Senior Open to eventually take the John Jacobs trophy.
And ahead of next month’s Senior Open Championship at Sunningdale, Woosnam is targeting victory at the famous Ascot course on July 23.
“I’ve won the Order of Merit now and so I want to get on and win a major - that’s the next step for me,” said the victorious 2006 European Ryder Cup captain who was awarded an OBE for the record-equalling win over USA.
“Winning the John Jacobs Trophy sits alongside the rest of the achievements in my career. It will go on the mantelpiece with the rest of them.
“What I want to do now though is win a major. It would be great to win The Senior Open Championship at Sunningdale as it’s a course I know well, although it has changed a bit.”
Welshman Woosnam played in eight Ryder Cups and etched his name in the history when he won the US Masters in 1991.
In 1988 he won the European Open at Sunningdale and won the Order of Merit twice in 1987 and 1990.
Further names to confirm their appearance in The Senior Open include Bob Charles, Christy O’Connor Jnr and Loren Roberts, while the soon to be knighted Nick Faldo will appear for the first time since being named on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
