TENNIS: Kohlschreiber wins Boodles Challenge

9:15am Mon 22nd Jun 09:: written by Steve Spencer

German No.1 Philipp Kohlschreiber looked solid on grass on Saturday as he took the 2009 Boodles Challenge title from Wimbledon’s 12th seed Nicolay Davydenko.

The crowd at Stoke Park were treated to a best of three sets with a championship tie-break decider. Kohlshreiber lost the first 2-6, then came back to take the second 6-2 and stormed the decider 10-5. The tennis was both world class and entertaining with Kohlschreiber’s backhand proving flawless.

Kohlschrieber said: "This really is one the most fantastic atmospheres I've ever played in and I have to say thank you to The Boodles Challenge for making it such an enjoyable tournament.

"I feel like I've had the best preparation for Wimbledon and maybe I can also win some rounds there!"

The German had beaten Nicolas Lapentti in straight sets in Friday's semi-final.

In other matches on the final day of the Wimbledon warm-up event, Great Britain’s very own Wimbledon champion Jamie Murray took to the court with partner Jonathan Erlich against the world No.1 doubles pairing Bob and Mike Bryan.

The American duo took the match in two straight sets but all four players delighted the crowd with some entertaining and exciting tennis.

In the final match of the day, World No.7 Gilles Simon was looking for his first win at Boodles this year. Russian Evgeny Korolev’s hard hitting was impressive, but Simon’s precision took him to a championship tie-breaker. In the decider, however, Korolev’s power proved too much to the Frenchman and the Russian took the tie-break 10-4.

Other players who played in this year’s event include Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Novak Djokovic (pictured) and Viktor Troicki.

Wimbledon gets underway at the All England Club today (Monday).
