Slough Ladies suffer European relegation for first time

3:59pm Thu 4th Jun 09:: written by Mike Haymonds

Slough Ladies HC suffered relegation for the first time at the European Club Championship in Holland after only managing one win in four games.

In their pool games a 2-2 draw with Atasport from Azerbaijan was followed by a 5-0 defeat by the hosts ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

After an 8-0 trouncing of Royal Antwerp of Belgium, Slough had to win their final game with the Ukrainians Sumchanka to avoid relegation.

But they were unable to recover from going two down in 20 minutes and lost 4-3 to leave them in seventh (equal) place.

Had they not conceded a last-minute goal against Atasport they would have been playing in the bronze medal match and there was still a chance they could finish second in their pool, depending on how many goals the Azerbaijanis conceded against the Dutch hosts in their last pool game.

But the Dutch won 2-0 and Slough lost out by two goals on goal difference.
