VIDEO: Maidenhead is lit up for Christmas

12:36pm Tue 2nd Dec 08:: written by Sonia Kapur

After weeks of anticipation a brother and sister finally lit up Maidenhead's town centre on Saturday night.

This year's Christmas lights were switched on by Jake and Lainey Craythorne as fireworks sparkled in the sky and hundreds of people turned up to watch the display at the Town Hall, St Ives Road, Maidenhead.

Jake, six, and Lainey, four, were the winners of the Advertiser's colouring competition and the job of lighting up the town was awarded to them as their prize.

The High Street was packed with stalls selling burgers and bread to Christmas trees and illuminious gadgets.

People followed the trail down the town centre and into St Ives Road, where they were greeted by a series of traditional fun fair rides including swings and a ferris wheel.

The Gentle Jazz Big Band provided music outside the town hall where people gathered for the countdown to the big switch on, followed by fireworks for the first time in numerous years.

This was the launch of a programme of festive events around town.
On Thursday, Norden Farm Centre for the Arts presents the Winter Parade from the Boy and Boat statue and there is late night shopping until 8pm.
On Thursday, December 11 there will be husky rides in town from 5pm and on Saturday, December 13, Rudolph will make a special appearance in Maidenhead.
