The life of a well-loved cricket coach was honoured at a memorial match on Sunday.

A Slough CC XI took on an Invitational XI in a 40 overs match at Slough Cricket Club in dedication to George Gittens, a former coach at both Slough and Maidenhead & Bray.

"The day in general was absolutely fantastic," said organiser Ricardo Lashley. "It was a success and an absolutely fitting tribute to George."

Up to 200 people attended and the Mayor handed out medals.

Around £800 was raised from the event at the Upton Court Road venue. All proceeds will be donated to a Just Giving webpage set up in George's honour to raise money for Sport 4 Life UK.

"The money goes to underprivileged children in sport," said Mr Lashley. "We already have plans in the pipeline as we speak to do this annually, but in a different format, getting local youngsters involved next year.

"George's aim was mainly geared towards helping youngsters in sport throughout the county."

Slough CC XI won the match by six wickets after the Invitational side posted a score of 236 in their innings.

George died from a heart attack in May last year at the age of 57. He left behind wife Lorna and their two children, as well as an ever-lasting legacy in local cricket.
