Drax speaks out

2:00pm Thu 25th Feb 10:: written by Charles Watts

Plans which would see a community centre or hotel built on Maidenhead’s York Road ground have been blasted by Magpies boss Johnson ‘Drax’ Hippolyte.

Drax says the club’s historic home, the oldest continuously used football ground in the world, should be protected and improved.

And he has hit out at the lack of support being shown to the club by the Royal Borough, labelling the council as ‘out of order’.

He said: “I normally leave that sort of thing to the powers that be, I try not to get involved with it all.

“But from my point of view it’s fantastic to have this stadium that is so old and has had football played in it continuously for so long. In a perfect world we should be able to spend some money with the help from the council to develop York Road as it needs work doing for it.

“Things like better recovery rooms for injured players would make a  big difference and is what’s needed at this sort of level.”

He added: “But the council haven’t helped us one iota from what I’ve heard which is very disappointing.

“So for them to just come out with plans for the site, saying they want to develop it is bang out of order.”
