Two landlords from Slough have been ordered to pay out £5,500 for refusing to let council officers inspect a property.

Nasir Mehmood and Zakia Mehmood, landlords of a three storey house in Spackman’s Way, Chalvey, went before Maidenhead Magistrates Court on September 26.

The fine follows an eight month investigation by Slough Borough Council's housing standards team after complaints that the property was being let in a substandard condition.

The couple ignored the council’s request for information about the house and failed to allow officers in to inspect it. The pair initially entered a plea of not guilty, but later changed it to guilty.

Mr Mehmood, of The Crescent, was fined £3,500, a £15 victim surcharge and £992 court costs, while his wife, of Spackman's Way, was fined £1,000 and £15 victim surcharge.

Keith Ford, housing standards manager for Slough Borough Council, said: “We hope other landlords will take note and co-operate with us to ensure properties are safe for tenants.”
