Fairer ways of boosting the council’s coffers

1:08pm Thu 4th Mar 10

There is talk of councils cutting back on staff and although it should have been done long ago, the council funds could be boosted by huge amounts if every wage earner paid something into the pot.

The original poll tax was the right way to go if it had been stopped at source and been graduated to income.

If three per cent was stopped from net money and paid automatically to the employee’s postcode authority, it would do away with most of the staff needed to collect council tax. It would have to have a ceiling of course.

Towns which have many immigrants would benefit. I helped deliver a bed to a house where the only rooms without beds were the kitchen and the bathroom. Doors could not be shut because the beds were wall-to-wall.

This house paid the same council tax as the elderly couple next door. Obviously this is not fair. The idea of having to weigh waste would not be needed because the more people making the waste in the house would pay more money.

It’s all got too complicated and could be simplified, but as it might be a vote loser it probably will not happen.
