Tango! Tango! - Theatre Royal Windsor
11:31am Mon 29th Jun 09:: written by Sonia Kapur
Audiences were transported into a world of tango on Saturday night.
I didn't know what to expect from the show, but what I saw was extremely admirable and very experimental, writes Sonia Kapur.
The show by musician and author, Justin Pearson, is structured around Astor Piazzolla's life who talks directly to the audience as if we were his friends.
The character, who talks about how he was drawn into the world of tango, is played by Patrick Lanningan.
Despite some small issues with his microphone, he really kept the show together, and members in the audience were captivated with his vivid descriptions of the world of Buenos Aires.
His dialogue was intercepted by tango dancers Richard Manuel and Maria Solero. I could have watched their smooth and sharp moves for hours.
During the beginning of the performance I was slightly disappointed with the lack of connection between the two dancers. However by the end of the show there was plenty of passion and chemistry between them.
The use of lighting and the smoke machine helped create this mood and perhaps could have been introduced a little earlier.
The greatest credit for the show must be handed to the five great musicians. It was really relaxing to sit back and listen to the classical but also contemporary pieces.
