A community-minded woman from Maidenhead is celebrating after winning a town centre pub's community champion gong.

Maria Evans, 41, of Ray Lea Road, is to have a beer named after her called the 'Good Evans' ale and money donated to the Family for Friends charity from sales of the beverage.

She beat off competition from a host of other entrants and picked up her award from Maidenhead MP Theresa May on Friday.

Maria, who works as a vounteer at Maidenhead-based charity Family Friends, was nominated by the volunteer coordinator at the charity Helen Care.

"Maria is a really good volunteer and represents the views of the volunteers, a great ambassador. She is always ready to give time, and is an infectious person," said Helen.

Maria said she was touched to receive the award.

"I was very surprised to be nominated and to be recognised is amazing," she said.

Luke Wakeling, landlord at The Bell, said: "Our hunt took us to all areas of Maidenhead and it was a tough decision, but we have a very deserving winner.

"Maria Evans is a real star who gives up her free time to make a significant contribution to other people's lives."
