Battle over for wacky Walkers crisps inventor

12:19pm Thu 7th May 09:: written by Dan Darlington

The inventor of Britain's wackiest flavour of crisps has fallen short in her bid to win Walkers 'Do Me a Flavour' competition.

Catherine Veitch, who grew up in Wooburn Green, came up with Chocolate and Chilli flavoured crisps for the campaign last year.

But she only managed to scoop 114,775 votes, well behind winning flavour Builder's Breakfast, 232,336, which took more than 20 per cent of the total votes cast.

Her love-it-or-loath-it flavour went into production earlier this year and battled it out on shop shelves with Fish and Chips, Builder's Breakfast, Onion Bhaji, Cajun Squirrel and Crispy Duck and Hoi Sin.
However, it seems her flavour proved just that little bit too bizarre for the nations taste buds.

Builder's Breakfast, created by Emma Rushin of Belpa Derbyshire, will now stay in the shops permanently and the winner is set to pocket a tasty £50,000 and one per cent of all future sales.

Do Us a Flavour competition kicked off in 2008 with Walkers challenging crisp lovers to invent a brand new flavour. From more than 1.2 million entrants six finalists were selected by a judging panel including Mr Blumenthal.

All six flavours went on general sale in January this year, and millions voted to say which should stay in the shops.

Final votes:

Builder's Breakfast - 232,336
Onion Bhaji - 221,032 votes
Fish & Chips - 218,270 votes
Crispy Duck & Hoisin - 176,184 votes
Cajun Squirrel - 116,777 votes
Chilli & Chocolate - 114,775 votes
